Maidstone Greens have criticised the Health Secretary's decision to allow the downgrading of maternity services at Maidstone Hospital and have backed calls for a judicial review. In a letter to the Kent Messenger, new mother and Maidstone Green, Ellen Crozier, called the decision flawed and un-ethical.
Ellen Crozier, Maidstone Green Party: "The Health Secretary’s recent decision to allow the closure of the maternity unit at Maidstone General Hospital cannot be justified financially, politically or ethically.
"The decision has clearly not been made to reduce the Trust’s overall spending. Rather it has been made to help finance the expensive PFI build at Pembury to serve the people of Tunbridge Wells."
The decision is also in opposition to the government’s own ideological commitments to patient choice and GP voice. 97% of local GPs oppose the closure of the unit.
"Most importantly from a personal perspective as a new mother, the decision is ethically wrong. It is unforgivable that the Trust is willing to put mothers through this at such a vulnerable time."
